Bad News: Business Cutting Back
|
| |

According to a study by the Institute for Corporate
Productivity, 88 percent of companies that were surveyed plan to
implement cost-cutting measures within a year.
When asked
about how companies plan to reduce costs, 87 percent said that
efficiencies will be improved. Seventy-one percent said they are
considering cutting discretionary spending, while 65 percent
will seek lower costs from vendors. The good news is that
“just” 33 percent said that staff layoffs are imminent.
The most likely cutback targets are operations, closely followed
by administration and using external vendors or outsourcing.
Thirty-five percent said they will look to their Human Relations
departments for cuts.
“In this uncertain economic
environment, it’s clear companies are intent on not being caught
flat-footed,” notes Kevin Oakes, CEO of i4cp, “but so far it’s
looking more like careful surgery than a bloodbath. Layoffs
don't seem to be the first choice for a lot of companies.”

Canadians Opt for Common Platform
|
|

Canada’s provincial government recently announced a major
advancement in distance education.
Until now, the K-12
system, Memorial University and the College of the North
Atlantic all have had separate distance education programs. But
now, the three levels are partnering with Desire2Learn — a
provider of e-learning technology — to provide a common platform
across all education levels.
Students moving from high
school into post-secondary, who will continue to take courses
through distance education, will no longer have to learn or
adapt to a new system.
Education minister Joan Burke told
a Canadian newspaper that this is the first time in any
jurisdiction in North America that all public education
institutions have come together to provide students with a
common technology.
The project will cost about $1.3
million.

Low-Tech Social Networking
|
| |

Companies in Silicon Valley — home to high-tech companies like Apple and
Google — are opting for “low-tech” social networking during staff
meetings. Managers are telling their employees not to bring laptop
computers to office meetings.
Naturally, there's even a snappy
term for the move: topless meetings.
Sue Fox, author of “Business
Etiquette for Dummies,” told the Los Angeles Times that “face-to-face
meetings have become a low priority because they're constantly
interrupted by technology, and people can’t figure out what to do.”
John Vars, one of the founders of Dogster.com, has another take: "Even
if people are just taking notes, they are not giving the natural human
signals that they are listening to the person speaking. It inhibits
teamwork."
And these “topless meetings” are just one dimension of
the new corporate-think. Another is “meataxo,” which means getting rid
of office meetings completely.
