E-learning in 360 Degrees
|
| |

In the future, e-learning technology may take advantage of
videos filmed with the IMViewer system from Immersive Media
Corp. Learners will be able to control the scene, seamlessly
moving the perspective a full 360 degrees.
The
technology is based on a Dodeca 2360 camera, which can record 11
image streams. The 20-pound camera also has four built-in
microphones. The company’s software turns the camera’s digital
video files into “telemersion” files. Then, the compressed
videos can be viewed on computer monitors, video screens,
head-mounted displays, or projected onto a dome screen.
The software can also blend the entire 360-degree scene onto a
single 2D screen, called a "sphere movie" that can be watched on
standard software such as Quicktime or Windows Media Player, or
recorded on DVDs. They're also compatible with MPEG-2 and
MPEG-4, and can be broadcast using HDTV-resolution channels.

U.S. Technology Investments Only 6%
|
|

According to Bub Suh, the chief technology strategist for
Accenture, U.S. companies are now falling behind global
competitors in driving productivity and earnings growth from
technology.
“This is because U.S. companies deploy most
of their fresh capital to fortifying older systems while more
companies in Europe and Asia invest in newer systems from the
ground up,” Suh wrote in an e-mail press release.
When
executives were asked in an Accenture poll whether they want to
be a leader in adopting technology or a late follower, only 6
percent in the U.S. said they want to lead, compared to 15
percent in Europe and 19 percent in China.
“[Meanwhile],
the Chinese are aggressively forward investing,” Suh points out.
“In our research, a full 70 percent of Chinese companies are
committing a major part of their business to Web services,
compared to 48 percent for European companies and 42 percent for
U.S. companies.”
