Bill Gates Pledges IT Resources to Arab World

During his keynote address at a January government leaders forum in Abu Dhabi, Bill Gates revealed the results of a new study by IDC underscoring the impact of information and communication technology on the Arab world’s economy.

“Technology has touched millions of lives and played a significant role in fostering economic development across the region,” Gates said. “Microsoft’s goal is to [help] governments and partner organizations … use technology to accelerate social and economic development.”

The Microsoft-sponsored IDC research project found that the Microsoft “ecosystem” plays a key role in driving the IT industry’s overall contribution to job growth and economic development in the region, which is composed of Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and United Arab Emirates. The study also found that for every $1 that Microsoft earns in 2007, companies working with Microsoft in that region will earn $15.56.

Cisco + Collaboration = Success

With its purchase of WebEx, Cisco is making itself the test bed for the next generation of collaboration tools. Since it began rolling out immersive conferencing technology about a year ago, the company has established “telepresence” rooms in 160 of its offices worldwide.

Cisco CIO Rebecca Jacoby and her team also have created an online "communications center of excellence," for new collaboration tools from wikis to v-logs to telepresence. Video, she noted is “phenomenally effective,” particularly in communicating with employees outside the U.S.

Cisco is open to new ideas. Through its I-Zone wiki, the company has garnered 600 ideas that have the potential to become $1 billion-per-year ventures. “They’re not all good, but even the bad ones may spur a good idea,” said Marthin DeBeer of the company’s Emerging Technologies Group.

NBC Answers Students on Web

As the year’s presidential election campaign shapes up to be one of the most unpredictable and dynamic political events in history, NBC News is making available its top political reporters and experts to answer pressing questions about Decision ‘08 from the nation’s students and teachers.

“Ask NBC News” is an exclusive feature of NBC News Archives on Demand, a rich compilation of thousands of primary source video resources created specifically for classroom instruction to engage students in active learning and transform classroom instruction into 21st century “e-learning” centers.

Students and teachers can submit questions via e-mail or text message. Each Thursday, the NBC News political team, including “Meet the Press” host and Washington D.C. Bureau Chief Tim Russert, Washington D.C. Correspondent Pete Williams and Chief White House Correspondent David Gregory, will answer one question and make the video available.
