E-Harnessing the Power of Informal Networks

Most large corporations have dozens — if not hundreds — of informal networks that can lead people to share ideas and collaborate.

As informal structures, these networks are difficult or impossible to manage because they depend so much on serendipity. But by creating formal networks, companies can harness the advantages of informal ones and give management much more control over networking across the organization.

The steps needed to formalize a network include giving it a “leader,” focusing interactions on specific topics, and building an infrastructure that stimulates the ongoing exchange of ideas.

An article available from “The McKinsey Quarterly” asserts that the differences between formal networks and matrix structures are significant, but a formal network reaching across the hierarchical structure can facilitate employee interactions.

Duke University has distributed iPods to 1650 new students, pre-loaded with useful orientation information. Students can download from the Duke Website, similar to iTunes, where they will find orientation schedules, audio books, language lessons and lectures.

Over in the U.K., Epic is launching an MP3 learning service. After an initial period of research, it has scripted and recorded sample learning objects based on the three-minute single principle.

“Nomadic learning or m-learning has assumed that the mobile phones and/or PDAs are the most probable devices for delivery,” Epic contends. “In practice, simple MP3 players may be more effective. iPods, in particular, have taken the market by storm. Indeed Apple has been transformed by the iPod.”

So do the iPod and similar MP3 devices offer a new channel for learning? Find out in a free white paper from Epic.

Walden University is the largest online provider of graduate education programs in the United States with more than 20,000 participants to date, according to “U.S. News & World Report.”

The magazine’s “E-Learning Guide” provided at-a-glance information on 383 graduate degree programs in business, education, engineering, library science, nursing and public health.

More teachers are turning to online learning for both advanced (masters, doctors) degrees and for continuing education courses. The number one reason is because distance-learning and e-learning allow them to continue teaching while they study.
